Understanding communication differences in Dyslexia

Understand communication differences associated with Dyslexia and how to support students within the classroom.

Description

This course is jointly delivered by Carolyn Gelenter (Advisory Teacher for SLCN) and the SLT Service. Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty which primarily affects reading and writing skills. However, it does not only affect these skills. Dyslexia is actually about information processing. Dyslexic people may have difficulty processing and remembering information they see and hear, which can affect learning and the acquisition of literacy skills. Dyslexia can also impact on other areas such as organisational skills.

Sometimes, having dyslexia can impact the acquisition of verbal language skills e.g. vocabulary. Dyslexia can also co-occur with other conditions, such as ADHD or language disorder.

Outcomes

  • To understand the diagnosis of Dyslexia.
  • To understand the impact of Dyslexia within the classroom.
  • To understand how language acquisition can be impacted.
  • To learn strategies to support pupils.
